Rughwani Child Care & Hospital
Rughwani Child Care Centre and Hospital was set up in 2004 by eminent paediatrician Dr.Vinky Rughwani and his wife Dr.Sangeeta Rughwani. The hospital became one of the only hospitals in North Nagpur with the state-of-the-art equipment and amenities like neonatal ICU, operation theatres and integrated childcare services.
It started off as a 15-bed facility which has now extended to a 30-bed facility. Over the years, it evolved into a multispecialty hospital with gynaecology, haematology, dermatology, oncology, gastroentology and endocrinology among others.
Since its very inception, there is a special ward of the hospital dedicated to the treatment of genetic blood disorders sickle cell disease and thalassemia. The centre provides free medicines and blood transfusion to kids with these conditions by means of relevant government schemes. The hospital is also empaneled with the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (Jeevandayee) and private insurers as well.
Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society of India is a registered NGO has been working in tandem with the Daycare centre at the Rughwani Child Care Hospital, Nagpur since 2006. The aim behind setting up the organization was to improve awareness, prevention and management of both the genetic condition which are prevalent in and around Central India. Both these chronic, genetic blood disorders make the patients susceptible to infections. Thalassemia patients are require to undergo blood transfusions every few weeks, and medicines to undo the excess iron deposition due to the transfusion. Sickle cell disease patients are more likely to get anemia. They also require regular pain management and strict monitoring of their vitals.
The society helps patients access the government schemes that provide them with free transfusion and medicines as well as funding from private resources for the benefit of patients with financial challenges.
The society conducts regular awareness campaigns to educate masses about thalassemia and sickle cell disease. It also carries out many screening camps to diagnose people from vulnerable communities to screen carriers of these genetic blood disorders, and counsel them.
